Air & Water Inc. in Santa Ana started with a simple idea for a side business: Sell heaters, coolers, water purifiers and other home appliances online. The initial inventory was all loosely related to air and water, so founder Luke Peters decided to keep the company name simple.
But after eight years of continually adding products based on what sells, Air & Water is now one of the largest appliance sellers on the Internet. It offers 1,500 to 2,000 items as diverse as vacuum cleaners and wine chillers. Its newest category is coffee makers and espresso machines. It is a power seller on eBay and also sells through Amazon.com.
Air & Water recently broke into Internet Retailer’s list of Top 500 e-commerce websites.
The company has 30 employees but it started as a part-time venture run out of a Huntington Beach condo.
Luke Peters was a 28-year-old hazardous waste scientist for the Dept. of Toxic Substances Control when his older colleagues told him he was too young to “retire” to a government job and encouraged him to go into private industry.
“My whole family is entrepreneurs. My parents started Catholic Bookstore,” Peters says. “My brother was five years younger and doing well selling computer electronics online, so I started studying how to run a business online.”
